Abstract

Material Hydroxyl terminated Polybutadiene (HTPB) is the principal constituent
components of composite solid rocket propellant that is very important in addition to Ammonium Perchlorate (AP). HTPB can be prepared by several mechanisms (anionic, free radical, ionik coordination) through the polymerization of butadiene. Before conducting the process of polymerization, butadiene as the raw-material, must be purified from inhibitor and water. The inhibitor contained in the butadiene is tert-butyl catecol (TBC). Several methods of physical separation can be applied by using a column with alumina as an absorber can be applied to separate the inhibitor and water from the butadiene. The separation is done with two columns. In the first column, the alumina absorber will absorb the inhibitor and water from the butadiene. In the Second column, the alumina absorber will absorb the remainder inhibitor. The results show that, by using the two columns, the inhibitor and water can be separated well from the butadiene. Quantity of inhibitor absorbed from the butadiene is 95 percent.
