Abstract

The National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) is the next generation of low earth orbiting environmental satellites which will serve civil, military and scientific communities with a higher accuracy. The NPOESS will circle the Earth once every 100 minutes. During in the orbit, the NPOESS will be providing the global coverage, monitoring environmental conditions, collecting, disseminating and processing data about the Earth's weather, atmosphere, oceans, land, and near-space environment. The NPOESS will converge the existing polar-orbiting satellite systems under a single national program. The NPOESS consist of four satellites (C1 – C4). The first NPOESS is planned to be launced in 2013. This paper describes the technical characteristics of the NPOESS satellite system, the technical characteristics of sensors, the characteristics of image data, the ground segment, the analysis of the uses of the NPOESS image. The study method is accomplished by studying literatures which was obtained from the satellites’ operator, previous research results, and by performing the analysis as well.
