Abstract

The ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) which has been succesfully launched on January, 24, 2006 has five main missions i.e. 1) Cartography, 2) Regional Observation, 3)Disaster Monitoring, 4)Resources Surveying, 5)Technology Development. To achieve the ALOS main missions, the satellite is equipped with three remote sensing sensors and mission supporting subsystems. The three sensors consist of two optical sensors i.e. PRISM (Panchromatic Remote Sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping) and AVNIR-2 (Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer type-2), and one microwave sensor or radar i.e. PALSAR (Phased Array type L-band Syntetic Aperture Radar). This paper describes the technical characteristics of the ALOS satellite, and the three sensors, the mission supporting subsystems, the characteristics of the ALOS image data, the ALOS data products, the ALOS data application, and the analysis of the use of the ALOS data for several applications. The study method is accomplished by studyingliterature/information/data which was obtained from the satellite operator, the internet, the current and previous research resluts, and performing analysis as well.
