Abstract

The ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) which has been succesfully launched on January, 24, 2006 has unique characteristics for mapping mission. The ALOS satellite is equipped with three remote sensing sensors and the mission suporting subsystems to achieve the ALOS main missions. The three sensors consist of two optical sensors i.e. PRISM (Panchromatic Remote Sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping and AVNIR-2 (Advenced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer type-2), and one microwave sensor or radar i.e. PALSAR (Phased Array type L-band Syntetic Aperture Radar). This paper describes about the characteristics of ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) for mapping mission and the data potential for mapping application which consist of the main characteristics of ALOS, the characteristics of the sensors and the data, the capability of the satellite for mapping mission and the analysis of the uses or the potential of the ALOS data for mapping applications. The study results showed that the technical characteristics of ALOS satellite, PRISM, AVNIR-2, and PALSAR sensors and the mission supporting subsystems are fully met mission rrequirements for mapping application. The study method is accomplised by studying literature/information/data which was obtained from the satellite operator, the internet, and the current and previous research resutls, and by performing analysis as well.
